The Amana Corporation had its start in the 1930s as a manufacturer of commercial walk-in coolers. By 1954, Amana made air conditioners. In 1965, Amana was acquired by Ratheon, the company that invented the microwave oven. By 1967, Amana introduced the Radarange, the first popular microwave designed for home use. Amana expanded to other household appliances, such as ovens, furnaces, dishwashers, washing machines and dryers. In 2001, Amana was bought out by the Maytag Corporation. Recently, in 2006, Maytag (and the Amana name) were bought out by the Whirlpool Corporation.

Amana's groundbreaking Radarange microwave ovens are still in production today. Amana microwaves are made in both countertop and over-the-range configurations.

Countertop Amana microwave ovens are made in 0.8, 1.0, 1.4, 1.5 and 2.0 cubic foot capacities. Power outputs range from 800 watts to 1,100 watts. The countertop models can be installed with an optional mounting kit above electric wall ovens. Even the smallest models offer one-touch cooking for commonly-microwaved foods such as potatoes, popcorn, pizza, fresh vegetables and frozen dinners. An auto defrost feature thaws meat perfectly through for quick meals. Amana's Touchmatic control system makes their microwaves simple to operate. Countertop Amana microwaves are available in stainless steel, white and black.

Amana's over-the-range microwaves come in 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 cubic foot sizes. They are all 30 inches wide. Power output varies from 1,000 to 1,150 watts, depending on the unit. The over-the-range models include the Touchmatic control system to make microwave cooking quick and easy to understand. An auto defrost feature thaws food by weight perfectly through and through. Auto reheat makes reheating food simple and easy and actually makes leftovers taste good. Amana over-the-range microwaves are available with black, white and stainless steel finishes. One-touch sensor monitored cooking on certain models will automatically cook common microwave foods like potatoes and, pizza and vegetables to perfection.
